Here's the thing most people don't know: the "GIFs" on X aren't really GIF
files. To keep things fast, X converts every GIF into a short, silent MP4
video behind the scenes. So when you download one, you'll get an
MP4 — which is smaller, sharper, and works everywhere a GIF
does. If you specifically need a .gif file, converting takes
one extra step (below).
How to download an X GIF
- Open the post with the GIF and copy its link (Share → Copy link).
- Paste the link into the box above.
- Press Download, then save the MP4.
Want a real .gif file?
For messaging apps, Discord, or most social posts, the MP4 you get will autoplay and loop just like a GIF — you usually don't need to convert. If you do need the actual format:
- Drop the MP4 into a free converter like ezgif.com and export as GIF.
- On phone, a free "video to GIF" app does the same in a couple taps.
- Keep in mind real GIFs are larger and lower quality than the MP4 — only convert if a service specifically requires
.gif.
Why MP4 is usually better
An MP4 of the same animation is often a fraction of the size of a GIF while looking noticeably crisper, because GIF is limited to 256 colors. That's exactly why X switched to MP4 in the first place.
